The Evolution of Orthopedic Technology

The medical field is always changing and growing– trying to perfect treatments and create the best experience for patients. Today, there are simple procedures for conditions which could have been the end of someone years before. Like other focuses in medicine, orthopedics has changed a great deal over the years and has become an area which treats an endless array of conditions.

What are Orthopedics?

Orthopedics can cover a range of surgeries and treatments relating to the musculoskeletal system, which controls the mobility of the body. This area of medicine has been around since the late 1700s when Jean-Andre Venel founded the first orthopedic treatment center. Since then, orthopedics has grown and morphed, evolving to be able to treat more and more injuries and conditions, to become what it is today.

While Jean-Andre Vendel did kick off the world of orthopedics, Antonius Mathysen revolutionized the field with his cast made from plaster of Paris. Over the years, orthopedics has treated diseases, infections, disorders, and injuries all over the human body. Many orthopedics treat injuries in athletes, dancers, and similar careers and hobbies.

Because orthopedics is such a large field, professionals often have an area of focus. This can include…

  • hands,
  • shoulders,
  • feet and ankles,
  • joint reconstruction,
  • sports medicine,
  • orthopedic trauma

…and many other areas.

Changes in Orthopedics

Orthopedics are widely different today than when orthopedic surgeries were first performed, although a lot of the fundamentals still remain. Casts and splinting techniques are similar today to how they were in the beginning, although new technologies have made orthopedics treatments safer and more convenient. Advances in x-rays and intramedullary rods, for example, have made treating fractures and breaks easier and cut down greatly on healing time. In any new orthopedic technology, treatment, or tool, the main objective is to make orthopedic surgeries less invasive and treatment longer lasting.

Another branch of orthopedics which has seen a lot of change over the years is chiropractics. Chiropractic treatments have been performed since the mid-1800s, although it is only in recent decades that they have built up an all-around trusted reputation. Over the years, patients have had concerns about the safety of chiropractics, though many agencies concluded that chiropractic treatments can be more effective than alternative treatments through experiments throughout the 1990s.

Chiropractic treatments are non-invasive and pain-free, and have become the treatment of choice for many cases of back pain and spinal injuries. A trained doctor can perform spinal adjustments which will not only treat temporary pains, but chronic conditions as well. Chiropractic adjustments, often coupled with a regular exercise plan, can often be the easiest, cheapest, and most effective cure to back, neck, or spine problems.
